3.0 out of 5 stars I almost bought another Western Digital WD, September 21, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
I purchased a WD TV Live Plus. It was easy to connect wirelessly albeit I bought a Rosewill RNX-N180UBE 802.11 b/g/n wireless adapter because the device did not have built-in wireless ability. Setup was a snap. The WD worked perfectly, but the user interface seemed rather drab. There weren’t a lot of channels, but I had never owned such a device and thought it sufficient. I don’t like shopping and rarely prolong the experience by taking something back to the store.

Having read many customer reviews on media players here at Amazon, I decided to try a Roku 2 XS. I thought that even if I liked the Roku, I wouldn’t return the WD. However, the interface and the large number of channels were so much better than the WD that I was compelled to return it in exchange for another Roku 2 XS. I liked that the Roku also had a USB port and would play media from a flash drive. In addition, the Roku comes wireless capable.

I was informed that the WD can access media on a computer hard drive connected to a network provided the computer is running Windows 7. I don’t think Roku has this ability at this time, but the bright colorful user interface and the incredible number of channels ore than make up for this. If the price of the Western Digital WD was half that of the Roku 2 XS, I’m not sure that I would be interested. Perhaps if I had a media server I might think otherwise.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost didn’t buy it from all the bad reviews!, September 19, 2011

This review is from:Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
Almost didn’t buy it from all the bad reviews, but it’s become my most favorite purchase!!! How I love this thing, let me count the ways! I love that I no longer have to spend hours burning movies, pictures and music onto discs if I want to watch/listen to them on my TV. Now I simply plug in my Flash Drive/External Hard Drive and I’m good to go! Everything in one compact place. My other new favorite thing is that now I can stream Netflix movies. I’ve had my netflix membership for years, but now I can watch movies and catch up on shows I’ve never had the patience to watch sitting at my computer. I just lay in bed and really enjoy this device!

A lot of bad reviews about this player freezing up or jamming, and constantly needing to be restarted to function again. I had experienced this in the beginning about a dozen times, but there’s an option that pops up that asks you if you want to upgrade to the latest version of this product. It took several minutes to upgrade, but be patient. Once it upgraded and restarted itself, I have (knock on wood) NEVER experienced another freeze-up or any problem again!

Nothing but absolute love for this thing!!!!!!! I use it almost everyday!

1.0 out of 5 stars Hard to compare if you used apple TV, November 18, 2011 This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
Boy is this thing disappointing and quirky after using apple TV
setup was easy but unless you use local media this thing is just
as slow as was the apple tv over wifi. I wish I just bought apple tv
with a 160 gig hard drive instead! If you are using a Mac go with apple tv
with built in hard drive. Much much better and integrated with Itunes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Plays almost anything!, November 16, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
Great product! This is a great media player! Its definitely the best among its competitors out there like the Sea gate syatem or the Lacie one but this is simply the guru of all! What I like about it is its simplicity….easy to hook up as son as you take it out of the box, great user interface. The quality is amazing! Digital sound and video quality is brilliant!!!
It plays all popular formats for movies, music and photos! Allows for 2 hard drives to be attached! That is 6GB right now! How much more space would you need! There are other more expensive alternatives out there like Sonos but for this price it doesn’t get any beter than this!

    1.0 out of 5 stars I didnt’ like it, November 16, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
I only kept this for a couple of days. It was way too slow and it didn’t add anything to my system that I couldn’t do quicker with other options. I have a PC next to my HDTV and I use WMC to watch movies steamed from Netflix or Amazon Instant Video. I have an HD TV card that connects my PC to the TV so I don’t lose any picture quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars WD TV Live HD does what I want, November 16, 2011 This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
    Installation was easy.
Connect it to the network and minutes later you can start watching.
Picture quality is fine. I mainly am using it to watch Netflix.
It could be a bit faster – after switching on it takes some time before the Menu is shown.
The device doesn’t look very modern, but since it’s very small, this doesn’t make much difference.
I am using the device in The Netherlands; this model is not for sale here.
Amazon delivered within a few days after ordering. I am using unblock-us to be able to watch Netflix outside the US. It works fine with the WD TV Live Plus HD.

I’ve had it now for a while and I love going on it and surfing Youtube and watching Netflix. I’m sure it will continue to improve and be well worth the money I paid for it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Amazon sent the wrong item, November 9, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
The WD TV Live took forever to get here from Amazon and when it arrived they sent the NON Plus version. Customer service said they will ship a replacement but it will be 5 to 7 days before it arrives. Generally Amazon does a good job with orders but they are dropping the ball all over the place here.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flash video files are only playing in the fast forward mode, November 9, 2011

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for streaming native AVCHD 1080p at 30fps, November 8, 2011
This review is from: Western Digital WD TV Live Plus 1080p HD Media Player (Electronics)
I have both the latest Apple TV, and this WD TV Live Plus. Yes I keep the firmware current.

    KEY POINTS:

    1) No question the Apple TV is vastly superior for browsing digital photos, and your iTunes music collection off your server PC located in your home network. It is superior because the Apple TV’s UI is so much better. All of this assumes (requires) you are willing to run iTunes on your server PC.

    2) WD TV Live Plus is vastly superior to Apple TV if you want to stream a wide variety of video formats, some in 1080p HD from a local USB drive, or from your server PC. The Apple TV cannot display 1080p and it cannot handle your video unless it is MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, H.264 video up to 720p X 30fps, AND you must get that video into the iTunes video library.

With the WD TV Live Plus, I literally dump the raw AVCHD 1080p X 30fps video files from our Canon HFS100 HD camcorder onto my network-shared video folder on our home PC. Then I walk over to our flat screen and the WD TV Live Plus steams those across the home network in buttery-smooth quality at full high def. The Apple TV cannot do that! In fact, every time I throw a wacky video format at these products, the Apple TV fails to display it, yet the WD TV Live Plus always plays the video format.

So the biggest benefit my family got from the WD TV Live Plus is that it got our years (and terabytes)of HD family videos conveniently browse-able on the flat screen in our family room! The Apple TV did that for my mp3 music collection, and digital family photos.

    3) I never expected my entire family to enjoy watching “in theater” movie previews on the Apple TV as much as we do. The previews are generally in HD (720p), and the UI for browsing them is great. It is far more fun and convenient to watch moview previews on Apple TV, compared to doing that using a laptop or PC to browse youtube, or whatever.

    4) Please be warned that initial setup of network sharing on the WD TV Live Plus is very complicated, and the product manuals do NOT describe the complex solutions. You have to browse user forums and then you find the complicated steps and process to get WD TV Live Plus to recognize drives or folders shared from your home network server PC. And when I write “complicated” keep in mind I’m an engineer tech geek who routinely builds PC’s from scratch, with 8 TB RAID10 arrays and nonsense like that. So I mean complicted.

    5) The other reviewers are correct: the remote for the WD TV Live Plus is a total piece of cr…

I think the WD TV Live Plus loses one star for the bad UI, and one star for the POS remote control.
