5.0 out of 5 stars This is the best Powerline Adapter on the market ( 2011), November 17, 2011
This review is from: >Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit (Personal Computers)
I replaced an older Netgear 85Mbs powerline adpter with the Western Digital WD Powerline Av Network Kit:
Pros:
Recommended by CNET’s Senior Editor Dong Ngo and selected as a CNET Editor’s Choice product
Much faster than my old Netgear 85Mbs power-line adapter
Simple setup ( no need to use the enclosed software CD Mac or PC) Just plug it to your router and electrical outlet!
Instantly adds 7 router ports to your home network
Nice form-factor that doesn’t take over your entire electrical outlet like the older power-line adapters
Cons:
I can’t believe how many people still don’t know anything about network power-line adapter technology which is too bad since this technology could really help a lot of people extend their network inexpensively and quickly over their existing electrical wiring without having to install and run an Ethernet cable
The enclosed Live Wire CD software disk–THERE IS NO NEED TO USE THIS SOFTWARE DISK ( Mac or PC)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent replacement for my 802.11g wireless setup, November 15, 2011
This review is from: >Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit (Personal Computers)
Our house is about 12 years old. The wireless connection to the upstairs PC has never been good. I started with 802.11b and upgraded to 802.11g a few years ago. The 802.11g has been very slow and drops connection regularly. I decided to try this as a work around because I really didn’t want to string Ethernet cable. This has worked GREAT! It has lost connectivity twice in the past couple weeks but I think that was something timing out in the PC instead of a problem with the Powerline setup. If I need another remote setup I would definitely by another one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works perfect for me!, November 14, 2011
This review is from: >Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit (Personal Computers)
A couple days ago I noticed that my internet went offline about once per half hour, after a few days diagnosing and talking to my internet provider, I finally found out that it was my wireless router’s problem. I live in an one-bedroom apartment, for some reason there’s only one cable interface in the living room, and no Ethernet interface in any other room….I didn’t want to buy another wireless router since I’ve had bought so many bad wireless routers.(Yes, I’m that unlucky, or I should have invested more money on a real good wireless router.) Then a friend told me about powerline network kits.
After looking thru a couple of options and reading all the bad reviews, I finally bought this one. After I got it, I soon opened the box, discovering nothing special but two network adapters, two AC power adapter, and two twisted pair cable.(By the way, the twisted pair cable is really, really, really short. I don’t need them anyways, if your computer/other network device is a little far away from a power socket, you may want to buy a longer cable.)
The installation was real simple, I didn’t even read the manual. Just plug in AC adapters, connect my modem to a network adapter, connect my PC to another one, and BANG! It started working immediately. I’m impressed, really.
I didn’t do enough speed testing, but it is sure faster than my wireless router. (I tested on speedtest.net, 18.5m download when using wireless, 22m when using this. My Belkin wireless router is a piece of …. < = u know wat.)
The most important thing is, my network has never dropped once, since then.
5.0 out of 5 stars Works great even in early-20th-century Victorian, November 10, 2011

I was skeptical at first, but bought this on a friend’s recommendation. This thing works on the ancient wiring in my c.1906 Victorian. Now I have a fast connection in a room that, for some reason, was like a Faraday cage for WiFi. Super simple to set up. Nice product!

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, November 8, 2011
This review is from: >Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit (Personal Computers)
I installed a pair of these as an alternative to a wireless bridge to get network connectivity in a distant corner of my home (relative to the router). I was initially skeptical, and I understand that the details of your home wiring does matter. I was apparently lucky, I get essentially the maximum speed my connection allows all the time, which is a surprising step up from the okay-but-not-great wifi coverage I was getting.
I give this four stars over five for two reasons. First, these only come in pairs. I need three, and it’s annoying I can’t buy a single additional unit. The second reason is that it’s not quite as simple as advertised. The paper manual is an ikea style step by step picture pamphlet, which may not be the best idea for network hardware. You may as well just skip to the pdf on the CD, the thing that got me was that you have to push the button within two minutes, but you also need to hold them down for less than three seconds, until the power LED flashes. Once I knew the trick and got them set up, they’ve been great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple and Effective!, October 28, 2011
This review is from: >Western Digital WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit (Personal Computers)
I have to admit I was skeptical when I first saw this as I had never heard of anything that could extend a high speed internet signal over the electrical wiring but given my exemplary experience with the WDTV line of products, I figured I would give it a try. To say I was blown away would be a massive understatement. Not only did it work as stated, it did so with almost no set up whatsoever.
I basically use this to steam media from my home server and it does so flawlessly. In fact, I have seen a slight increase in performance since moving to this device. Its important to note that I dont stream 1080p content. 720p is as high as I go with my movies. Most are roughly 8 gigs in size and they stream flawlessly. In all honesty, this is one of the most useful electronic devices I have ever purchased in regards to my home network. in fact, I have since added 2 more units to my home network. They really are amazing.
Bottom line – Ultimately the Powerline Network Kit is an amazing addition to an already great line of products from Western Digital. If you need to extend you home network, this is definitly the way I would do it. IMO, its basically a flawless device that does exactly what its says it does.
Highly Recommended!
