The best purchase Made So Far on Amazon, September 16, 2011

This review is from: Synology DiskStation 1-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS110j (White) (Personal Computers)
I must say that of all the things I have purchased on Amazon so far this is the best. Synology has way exceeded my expectations with this starter server. This mini home server features a very stable hardware and software design. It has tons of features built into the OS and has been a great tool for both my business and my home. From a business perspective I only use it to backup my files. I own a 3d animation company in NY and the files are worth thousands of dollars. So i decided to purchase it for the purpose of effortlessly backing up my files which is what I currently do using its native backup software. I use it with a 2 tb hardrive so I have more room on it which I use now for home media. This server is not really made for intense business applications like hosting a website that will be accessed by a large amount of clients. However, after trying this little guy out we intend to purchase their top of the line DS3611xs for hosting our company’s website and delivering rich media to our clients. Get this server, I have done the research and it is the best NAS out there hands down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product! Extremly happy with this product!, July 31, 2011

This review is from: : Synology DiskStation 1-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS110j (White) (Personal Computers)
This is an easy to use, great NAS server. I’m a computer technician and I generally like to find all the pros and cons in the product that I purchase. In this review, I’ll break it down into different key points/sections.

    Quick Facts:
The server can be used as an offline server; meaning that it does not need to be connected to the internet and be used through another company/service. Western Digital uses Mionet for accessing their NAS servers. In my case, I wanted to store sensitive files (finances, business documents, etc) on the server, and I didn’t want another company stepping in and handling my files. I wanted a direct connection through my personal network to access the files from the server.

You will need a standard 3.5 inch hard drive for this device. Keep in mind that Synology has a list of supported/unsupported hard drives. This can easily be obtained through their website. From what I’ve gathered, this Synology drive will support most modern SATA drives. This product will generally have some issues with the first generation SATA hard drives.

The product will also support standard 2.5 (laptop) hard drives, but you will need a bracket for that. This can easily be obtained through Amazon, eBay, etc.

Some individuals have complained about the noise this product makes. With this unit, I can barely hear the device running. There are two factors that can contribute to this, the hard drive and the fan. The fan speed can be controlled by the software (I’ll go into details about this later in the review) on the server. So, the fan noise is controllable. At default settings, the fan noise is hardly noticeable. The hard drive, depending on the brand, model, and age, can create noise that some would find irritating. I’m using a Western Digital hard drive.

The software to install the operating system (in simpler terms, the software to run the server) will be located on the disc in a folder called DSM. During the initial setup, the software will ask for this software; browse the folder and select the software. WARNING: Be sure to select the correct software, there will be multiple software files. The files are named after the models they are for, so search for you model (in this case: DS110j). The setup will install the software automatically.

The software on the disc will search your network for the Synology server; you can have multiple servers on your network; the software will support multiple servers at the same time.

Multiple computers can simultaneously access the server, however it cannot access the same folder simultaneously. Meaning that Computer A and Computer B can be logged into Account A and be using Folder A and Folder B (one computer each), but it will not actively share folders between two or more computers at the same time. Meaning that Computer A and Computer B cannot be accessing the Folder A at the same time.

The server will need to format the hard drive before it can use it, make sure to back up any data before initializing the drive. The server uses the ext2 file system.

It is compatible with Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. For Linux, I know that it will run with Ubuntu, Fedora, and OpenSuse (and Suse), without any problems.

To access the operating system on the server, you need to use a web browser. What I found very pleasing was that the operating system interface acts like an actually computer. Meaning that instead of acting like a website where the entire page refreshes/reloads in order to view something different, this device will open windows within the user interface. For network users (such as myself), this is a huge plus.

    Pros:
It’s fairly simple to use. The basic setup instructions are located on the disc, but if you have a general understanding of computers and networks, they are not really needed.

Customer support was very quick and helpful. I had called them to ask specific questions with regards to my home network setup, the person I spoke with was knowledgeable and quick.

The user interface that the server operating system uses is very beautiful and visually pleasing. The navigation controls in the Control Panel and operating system in general is very easy to use. The navigation controls are similar to the control panel on Mac OS X.

I’ve played videos off the server and not once did it jump or stutter while playing the video. I even tried to stress it out by jumping forward and back in the video to see if the connection would drop or return an error, the server gave no hint of a problem.

The server has built in SMART and thermal monitoring software.

    ———————————————————————————

    Cons:
After the initial setup, it doesn’t go into further explanation on how to use the server or access/modify the settings on the server. This is where you need to have some basic understanding of computers and networks. This personally wasn’t an issue for me, but this may pose problems to other who are not familiar with this area. There are help documents on the disc and online that will provide a basic understanding.

    ———————————————————————————

    Overall:
I am extremely happy with this product. This was a nice addition to my network. It was easy to setup, easy to use, and simply just worked. I previously used a Western Digital NAS, and had a lot of errors with it. Don’t get me wrong, I use Western Digital hard drives in every desktop and server system that I own. They’re very reliable, but their NAS drives are headaches based on my experiences with them.

I’m currently looking into purchasing a few more of these devices for my network.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synology NAS flexible storage access options, July 24, 2011

This review is from: : Synology DiskStation 1-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS110j (White) (Personal Computers)
The Synology NAS box is a good value. Very flexible access options. I purchased the DS110j and populated it with a 1 TB Seagate drive. It supports iSCSI so that it can work in conjunction with an installation of VMware ESXi on a PC, for portable software demonstration purposes.
