Great UI, so so performance, September 18, 2011

The disk station Ui looks fantastic. But until I started using it, I didn’t know most of the applications are actually running on the nas. For example the audio station is a web app that you run from the nas. Granted, it is a web app that’s hosted by the nas.
Performance of this model is ok. The reason for the slow down is because it has a slow single core arm CPU instead of the faster dual core atom CPUs the more expensive models have. Transfer speed is about 38-42MB/s upload and 53MB/s download.
Because of the arm CPU and paltry 128mb ram, this unit can’t run all of the addon. Overall it is a good unit for home use.

I’ve had the Synology Diskstation now for about 6 months and it works great! It may cost a little more up front than some of the other storage arrays out there, but the features this one advertises ALL work. I’ve been using the array to store photos and music for use here at home and have tested the remote access features while on the road without an issue.
I’m a previous owner of several D-Link and Netgear storage arrays which cost about the same, but have only about 30% of the capability that the Synology has. It’s a good buy, I highly recommend it!

I guess for those that were able to get this up and running it is a nice unit. But when I tried to install it, I was unsucessful. One screen showed “system ready” and the next screen “system busy”. Unfortunately, the “system busy” never changed. When I tried to contact Synology for support I got an online form to fill out. I filled out the form and clicked “Submit” Well, that didn’t work — I got a message that “the fields highlighted are incorrect or missing”. Funny, since nothing was highlighted. I tried changing a few items, but the form would still not submit. That left me unable to get any support.
At that point, I decided to return the item to Amazon. I figured that even if I could finally get it working, I did not want to deal with their technical support down the road.
I don’t know what rating “Ease of Use”, “Funtionality”, and “Accessibily” should get since the unit never operated for me.
