Step up to 7.1-channel home entertainment with the Onkyo stamp of quality. The HT-S5400 gives you the flexibility to harness the two extra front-height channels of Dolby Pro Logic IIz. Now movies, games, and music come alive with atmosphere and realism. When it comes to set-up, Audyssey 2EQ ensures the surround soundstage is adjusted to the proportions of your living room. And thanks to the system’s HDMI functionality, you can take advantage of Onkyo’s convenient overlaid on-screen display to adjust settings with a minimum of fuss. Naturally, the receiver’s four HDMI inputs also handle 3D video and high-def audio from Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Other connectivity highlights include a handy front-panel USB input that lets you send a clean digital signal from your iPod/iPhone to the receiver, and front-panel analog A/V inputs for easy connection of a game console or camcorder. To provide greater bass impact without taxing the receiver, the package includes an independently powered subwoofer.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice system, November 17, 2011
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package(Electronics)
large heavy package, very easy to set up with the included diagrams and the color coded wires. had to upgrade my dish network reciever so I could recieve HD, and so the HDMI cable could be used. Very happy with the sound quality. FINALLY I can hear and understand what those guys are saying on tv without turning it up loud. Very high quality components. definately worth the money. Really happy with my purchase.
5.0 out of 5 stars My Nephew was right about picking onkyo HTIB, November 15, 2011
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package(Electronics)
I’m very happy with the purchase of the HT – S5400 7.1 HTIB. With such a clean sound it makes our 55″ flat screen twice as good as before. HD movies and music knock your socks off. I really like the USB in the front of the receiver for down loading music to a 8GB flash drive. This unit fills in for the compressed (MP3/wma) file and make them really close to CD quality. I did have to buy 100′ of 16 gauge speaker wire for the surround/back speakers. I’m getting rid of my older stereo system which was big and bulky. Not to mention with half the sound quality. The audyssey setup puts you in the ball part for speaker setup and adjustment. Has all the nessesary bells and whisles you’ll ever want. The receiver does get a little hot, so I put a small/quiet computer fan to help dissipate the heat from the inclosed component cabinet with holes in the back. All in all the fan thing is probably a little overkill but it was pretty easy to apply.

1.0 out of 5 stars Poor Customer Service gets horrible rating, November 15, 2011
This review is from:Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
I’ve had several issues with this Onkyo Receiver. It can be quite finicky. I admit, I’m not a audiophile, and I don’t understand all the doodads and functions of the receiver. I tried calling customer service, technical support two times, and the person on the other line was not helpful at all, and most of the time, just downright rude. Why do they hire impatient people to work in customer service? I’ll never understand. Also, without warning, in between guiding me through some issues, the man hung up on me!!! twice!!! I had to just restore the default settings and start over. But honestly, if I knew the technical support was so horrible, I never would have bought from Onkyo. Yamaha would’ve gotten my business.
Therefore, if you are pretty knowledgeable and know your way around receiver settings/functions, and you like Onkyo’s price, then more power to you. But if you think you might need help setting up, or troubleshooting I would avoid Onkyo like the plague.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing system, November 14, 2011
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
This Onkyo system has all you need for amazing full theater sound. It is a 7.1 channel system which means you have 7 speakers plus a subwoofer You can select how to use your “extra” 2 speakers as either surround back or surround front “high”. What these extra speakers do depends on how you use them; the best way to think of these speakers is as added ambient sound, expanding the sound envelopment of your system. It makes the soundstage of your current system larger, without having to add larger speakers. Also, the front “high” speakers are set to extrapolate sound from Dolby pro-logic IIz codec which adds a feeling of height to the sound. Surround side/back ads depth to your sound. How you use the speakers depends on whether you prefer height or depth to the sound. If you have a long theater and bigger speakers, surround back may work better for you. In an average-sized room, height or width speakers will definitely add a new element to your system. I use them as side channels.
This system has plenty of power. It has connections for many different devices with different interfaces from HDMI to optical to component. Whatever you need to hook into it, you can. It has an ARC output for televisions equipped with the audio return channel. The speakers do not have preset threaded connectors for mounting. They do have standard eye-clamps for hanging on nails or hooks. I use speaker brackets and have simply screwed in the bracket mounts on the speakers. The front channel speakers are pretty large, and I did not have much luck with a single bracket securing them. I wound up using another bracket to hold the speakers from both the back and the bottom.
The system has lots of fancy buzzers and whistles that allow you to customize your sound and environment. It also come with a microphone and has a front jack so that you can set the unit to synch the sound from all your speaker channels to the perfect level for your listening position. It has remarkably full and rich sound and makes my movies and room feel like a full size theater. I cannot imaging a better all-around system for the same price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Pleased!, November 11, 2011
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
I have been searching for a good HITB system and didn’t want a fake receiver which has a dvd/blu ray as a receiver. The front left and right speakers are a bit tall and stand at about a foot tall and the center channel is approx a foot long so mounting the fronts may be tricky but can be done. The woofer is big and does pack a good punch when movies are played and it is self powered. The setup took me some time to do, alot of wires and making sure the connections to the receiver made positive contact. The best part about the system is the automatic setup via the mic. The system detected the speakers and made its own adjustments via how you setup the speakers in your room. There is also on screen setup which is a big plus, everything you need to or want to change can be done by the on screen menu which is great. The sound this system outputs is superb, action movies, sports, games. For the price and quality of Onkyo products is amazing if you are looking for some home entertainment I highly recommend this system!
2.0 out of 5 stars HDMI pass through not passing audio, November 10, 2011
This review is from:Onkyo HT-S5400 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver/Speaker Package (Electronics)
Received the unit 5 days before it was expected to arrive (thanks amazon!). The hook up process was pretty straight forward as well. Watching movies through the speakers was great, great sound, sub was pretty good too.
My big issue with this system was that I couldn’t get the hdmi pass through to work at all (I read the manual and called Onkyo directly). All I could get to pass through was video, every time I told it to pass the audio through, my receiver would for 2 seconds show “tv speakers” on the unit’s display then switch to “amp”. Onkyo suggested I get the receiver exchanged as it sounded like a bad unit to them, amazon sent me a new one in 2 days (thanks again amazon), hooked it up today to lo and behold the same issue. Spent 20 minutes with onkyo support, of which 15 was spent on hold before I got fed up and hung up. I am now in the process of returning not only the original unit but also the one amazon sent in exchange.
I never had any issue with hdmi pass through with my old Yamaha 5.1 receiver and have had to revert back to it while I look for another another 7.1 system that isn’t Onkyo.
