5.0 out of 5 stars A Home NAS for IT people, November 17, 2011
This review is from: Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS211J (White) (Personal Computers)
I find this little box to be a great step up from the cheap single disk NAS I had before. This has so much potential as a home server not just a NAS. I think you need some IT experience with disk systems to be comfortable setting it up as the software is enterprise grade, but once you start navigating around in the system it becomes quite intuitive.

5.0 out of 5 stars The better NAS of the market, November 10, 2011

This NAS is very fast and quiet. The iscsi is as fast as the dell power vault. I connect with a Linux or Win with no problems. it is just perfect for the home or middle side office.

5.0 out of 5 stars SYNOLOGY NAS, November 6, 2011

Replaced a useless Thecus 2200 device. Works exactly as expected. Setup is a bit tricky requiring a couple of tries but the end result works fine. Quiet. Fairly fast NAS for home, small biz. Peaks about 400kbits on a 1 Gbt network. Only negative is that the disk as inside and not in removable cartridges. Small issue to most.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great NAS, lots of function, November 3, 2011

This review is from: Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage DS211J (White) (Personal Computers)
After doing a lots of research on NAS drives I decided to get the DS211J and do not regret the decision. I put 2 2 TB disks into it and just plugged it all in. Formatting took a while, not as long as some had said, probably an hour or so. Defined the internal RAID format and setup the OSX time machine backups on the raid set. Getting my macs to recognize the drive was easy and backups occur pretty quickly. The first one took 6 to 8 hours. Also setup photo station and copied my phots onto the drive. The thumbnail process took a week to finish, so be prepared to wait. After it finished I setup photo station on the Internet so my mom coul download pictures anytime she saw something she liked.

I also experimented with backup, thought S3 would be cool, but after nuking the Internet for a week I decided on another strategy. I now do local copies to a USB drive that I alternate and rotate to offsite storage.

I love the system and software, think it is a bit underpowered, but that may be my local network.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to set up, and so far has functioned flawlessly., November 3, 2011

I will never use a server for simple disk storage again after buying the Synology DiskStation (Model DS211J). I hadn’t heard of Synology before and bought it purely based on reviews. It was replacing a failing Linux file server (bad disk in an array) that had given its all over several years, so we had to do something quickly, hence the review only based buying, wanting to replace the old server with thousands and thousands of hours on it.

So far, it’s been flawless. Very easy set up, with an windowed interface that operates through a web browser. The interface, if I understand correctly, is based on open source software, perhaps a Linux kernel. It’s a very slick and informative environment.

I opened the DiskStation up, and the build quality looks good.

I haven’t used it for a long time, but I’m guessing the reliability is going to rely more on the disks than the Synology device. That being the case the disks are being mirrored and should last a long time.
